Department:
History & Theory of Architecture and Heritage Conservation
Course Leaders:
lect.dr.arh. Liliana Cazacu
șef lucr.dr.arh. Cristina Constantin
Learning outcomes:
General objective of the course: Integrating the development of architectural design skills with an understanding of the complex social and technical environments in which buildings are produced. Acquiring the skill to critically evaluate the conditions imposed by a heritage context.
Specific objectives: Understanding the general theme and the location, with an emphasis on the issue of context; understanding the way of working and the principles for developing sustainable intervention proposals; understanding the practical professional aspects.
Content:
The project is designed as a simulation of research and design works (conservation-restoration, rehabilitation and insertion by expanding/remodeling the existing built structures) and includes their essential phases for the intervention in a protected historical area.
Each student will work on a self chosen property that is validated by the supervising team. It is recommended to choose a building with an area of approx. 150-300 sq.m. with historical and architectural value. The student, depending on the solution, can propose changes to the chosen construction without altering the identified values or/and the addition of new parts (their surface will not exceed the existing one) which will contribute to increasing the qualities of the building, but also of the adjacent area. Each student must demonstrate the deepening of specialized notions (architecture, conservation and restoration) specific to the third year of studies in an institution with an academic profile.
The project will include several phases, each marked as a distinct discipline in the curriculum. Of these, in stage 1 the following will be pursued:
1. Delimitation of the research area necessary to support the architectural-urban intervention; Documentary research (cartographic and iconographic documents, archival data, bibliographic notes, urban regulations in force, etc.)
2. In-situ research of the urban tissue delimited as a research area: mapping of research data, development of property inventory sheets and preparation of multi-criteria analysis plans; the presentation (photo) with the unfolding of the street fronts, the identification and differentiated marking of the morpho-stylistic elements, as well as the specific architectural vocabulary elements in the area surrounding the studied building.
3. Synthesis of research, evaluation of data and regulation of interventions: identification of cultural values and the attitude towards them, by establishing the degrees of protection; regulating the possibilities of intervention for the studied building and its neighboring area in relation to the identified cultural values.
Phase 1: Zone study, duration 3 weeks
a) site analysis (from a historical, architectural and urban point of view);
b) identification of values through bibliographic, archival and site research (historical, architectural, technical, urban, memorial, artistic, landscape values);
c) historical substantiation study for the area surrounding the chosen building for study.
Teaching Method:
Lectures with pictures, discussions, debates.
Presentation of works prepared by different authors, discussion of specific approaches.
The method of creative problem solving (data collection, problem formulation, idea discovery, identifying solution, solution practical realization); experiential and interdisciplinary learning methods; individual proofing, board proofing,, theoretical lectures, site visits, case studies; individual research activities; bibliographic study.
Assessment:
On-going evaluation.
Final evaluation
Defending each stage of the project
20% evolution and activity along the way
80% final submition, jury grade
