ST-21 High Performance Structures

The Faculty of Architecture / Architecture
5th Year, sem 2, 2024-2025 | Optional Course | Hours/Week: 2C | ECTS Credits: 2
Department:
Technical Sciences
Course Leader:
ing. Dragoș Marcu
Teaching language:
Romanian
Learning outcomes:
The lecture aim is to assure that the students get useful in depth knowledge about designing unusual buildings – high-rise buildings or large openings buildings.
Building on the students’ knowledge acquired by them during the previous semesters, this lecture follows the topic of the “special structure” as well as the analysis of the modern structural concepts in relation with the Romanian seismic hazard.
Using theoretical arguments as well as literature examples, the lecture presents the specific issues of structures with large and very large openings (cables, mash structures, etc.), specific materials and modern architectural and structural systems of high-rise and very high-rise buildings (core structures, mega structures etc.)
By the end of this lecture, the students will acquire the following competences:
1. Learning about structural designing principles used for high-rise and very high-rise buildings and hall type buildings with large and very large openings located in seismic areas
2. Analyzing the requirements and structural reliability criteria for unusual buildings
3. Learning about new materials and technologies specific for high performance structures located in seismic areas (high strength concrete, active and passive energy dissipation systems)
4. Learning about the models and simple methods for the preliminary design of steel hall structures and reinforced concrete multi-story structures
5. Learning about the architecture rules in seismic areas
6. Learning about the principles and basic procedures for seismic protection of buildings non-structural elements
7. Identifying the technical, technological and economic criteria needed for comparing different solutions in a given context
