Learning outcomes:
The discipline emphasizes cognitive skills and teaching activities aim at the correct use of notions and concepts such as: representative democracy, good governance, public policies, institutional framework, institutional responsibility, sustainable development, urban actor, urban planning documentation, integrated approach, etc.

Upon successful completion of this discipline, students will be able to:
 Explain human rights in relation to the built environment
 Analyze a situation from the perspective of balance between development areas (social, economic, environmental protection) = sustainable development
 Use specific notions: endorsement, approval, participation, consultation, etc.
 Describes the role of environmental professionals in the system of actors that influence its transformation
 Understands the need for collaboration between fields in urban planning and design: political and administrative sciences, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, etc.
 Analyze the interests and interactions between urban actors involved in a project (case study) so that they can identify cause-effect relationships in the processes of space transformation
Content:
-Definition and principles of sustainable development.
-People's needs, space and institutions that respond to needs - Space and social problems: discrimination, crime, social conflicts, corruption, poverty. Dollarstreet.
-Human rights in relation to development and space. Rights commented from the perspective of space as a support for human rights - Examples commented by students in media articles - lack of access or overcrowded spaces for education and health, makeshift housing (informal settlements), etc.
-The three sectors of society - Public, private, non-profit / non-governmental institutions and organizations
-Public decisions and space. how public is the public interest? Influences in decision-making processes. lobby and advocacy
-Elected representatives of social groups in the city, diversified priorities - Role play - local councilors arguments for & against an investment project inspired by reality
-Networks, norms and trust; Civic community - solidarity, civic participation. Jane Jacobs.

-Tools to promote sustainable development - Resources allocated according to strategies, programs, projects that demonstrate the application of the principles of sustainable development

Teaching Method:
Digital slides presentations, guided discussions, students' presentations based on individual or team work (research on the internet, in the library, on the field, reflection, classroom exercises). Students are accustomed to using search engines for very specific goal, and process the information so obtained.
Assessment:
Participation in guided discussions and class exercises: 60%
Individual work: essay handed during the exam session and oral presentation: 40% (20h individual work)
