Learning outcomes:
The Urban Housing course is meant to present current housing issues from a critical perspective. The main concept is that of “housing”, and it is approached from an architectural and urban perspective, integrated with a social, economic and political perspective.
Based on the components of these perspectives, the course aims:
- to discover the critical points of the interdisciplinary field concerned with the evolution of urban housing and the city’s evolution;
- to explain the way of thinking modern housing (as a political, urban and architectural aspect);
- to identify specific housing problems in Romania and help students become aware of them.
Content:
Housing in between architecture and the city. Approaches and perspectives.

Historical evolution of housing - the pre-industrial city.

The 19th century - the first housing policy measures.

Solving the housing crisis : urban models in the XXth century.

Elements of housing typology : operating criteria, classification methods.

Modern and postmodern approaches. Contemporary perspectives

Housing in Romania and Europe: a comparative overview.
Teaching Method:
- Image-aided lectures; commented videos
- Presentations of individual or team-based exercises – practical work and written tests.
Assessment:
40% team work (field exploration and evaluation of the quality of housing in a collective housing area)
60% final exam
Minimum grade 5.
