Learning outcomes:

The project aims to develop students' ability to conduct research and analyze the functional and morphological requirements necessary for developing a complex urban project, while identifying potential sites for its implementation. The goal is to define integrated, multifunctional urban interventions that involve both public and private participation and create urban public spaces. These interventions will be characterized by the primacy of the public and/or community interest, as well as by a responsible approach to the environment and energy consumption.

Content:

The project is organized on a modular basis and is the final installment in a series of "cascading" urban planning and design projects conducted during the second semester.

The project is carried out in teams. Each student group is assigned a complex project requiring integrated urban intervention planning, starting with the selection of a suitable site. Unlike real-world scenarios—and to facilitate the project's smooth execution—students may proceed on the premise that the local public authority will coordinate the implementation of interventions on the identified sites, acting either as the landowner or as a partner in a public-public or public-private partnership.

Phase 1 involves research into the complex project's requirements and the recommendations found in existing background studies and strategic documents. It also includes a comparative analysis of at least two potential sites and a justification for selecting the most suitable site within the study area.

Phase 2 focuses on detailing the complex urban project for the site selected in Phase 1: establishing the spatial concept—in relation to site requirements and constraints imposed by the specific type of urban project—and explaining the implementation mechanisms.

Teaching Method:

Discussions, workshop guidance, commentary on examples and case studies.

Assessment:

The following criteria will be considered in the project evaluation:
- Quality and depth of the analyses performed: case studies and comparative assessment of proposed sites;
- Ability to process, synthesize, and prioritize information;
- Logical flow of the approach (urban planning requirements for the complex project – site selection criteria – synthesis – spatial concept – operational planning);
- Creativity of the proposed solutions;
- Quality of graphic presentation;
- Teamwork;
- Skills in communicating project results during public presentations;
- Participation in workshops and progress made throughout the process.
