Learning outcomes:

The course aims to the knowledge of the concept of sustainable development and its evolution as well as to the understanding of the relationships between the objectives of sustainable development and the ways in which urban planning and design efforts contribute to their achievement. Analyzing, in a pragmatic way, the way in which planning and design for the transformation of space at various scales can help in achieving sustainable development will concretely make clear the objectives to which urban planning and spatial planning documentations must respond, in correlation with specific legislative provisions.

Content:

1. Concept. Evolution. Dimensions of sustainable development in relationship to the scope of urban planning and spatial planning documentation. Participatory process for Habitat 3 – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda

2. Sustainable development objectives, criteria and indicators
Leipzig Charter – RFSC - Reference Framework for sustainable cities (2007 - 2010)
The new Leipzig Charter (2o2o) – good governance, partnerships, rural-urban cooperation
Launch of paper theme 1 - case study analysis – given PUZ (zonal urban plan) initiated by Local Public Administration, in teams of 5 students (5 dimensions of the sustainable development).

3. Sustainable development at the scale of a neighborhood / city area - area based interventions - integrated approach - social inclusion and space

Launch of the topic of paper 2 - case study – County Spatial Plan (PATJ) – given case studies data and teams of 6 (with one student from the Master of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning Law)

10. SDTR and PATN sections - relationship with national strategies (Roma integration, climate change, etc.) - comparison with planning systems in other European countries

11. Presentations and discussions paper 2 - PATJ analysis (workshop on a Saturday)

12. Applied research for sustainable development in the EU: Horizon 2020 research projects

13. Green Deal - reducing the impact of climate change, New European Bauhaus (not only for architects)

14. Summary and guidance for the examination paper (individual)

Teaching Method:

Courses, video presentations, individual works, electronic support for the courses

Assessment:

Paper 1 - 30% of the grade: sustainable development and space on the scale of an area of the city - analysis of a PUZ initiated by the Public Authority: central area / protected built area / brownfields type area / large collective housing / urbanization area / urban area marginalized / ... Teams of 5 students (environmental protection, social field, cultural field, economic field, good governance)
Paper 2 - 30% of the grade: sustainable development and space at the scale of a county (analysis of PATJ in teams of 6 = 5+ 1 student from the Master of urban law applicable law / invoked legislation)

Examination Paper - Individual: 30% - a case study identified by the master student - urban planning or design for sustainable development - and a synthetic analysis - power-point with at least 10 slides in which there is a reporting between the proposals in the documentation / document and something that had an actual impact in reality.
10% active attendance at courses / presentation of individual paper in exam zoom meeting
