The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Landscape Design and Planning is an undergraduate programme in the field of urbanism, with a specialization in landscape architecture, delivered over four years (240 ECTS credits). It prepares specialists capable of understanding and managing the processes of territorial development and transformation by integrating the principles of urban planning with those of landscape design and planning. Graduates acquire competencies in the analysis and design of the built environment and landscape, adopting an integrated approach to the relationship between the natural, cultural, and anthropogenic components of the territory, in the context of current challenges related to sustainability, heritage conservation, and climate change adaptation.
The curriculum is based on a multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary approach, bringing together knowledge and methods from architecture, urban planning, ecology, geography, natural sciences, social and technical sciences, as well as sustainable development. This diversity of perspectives enables students to understand the landscape as a complex system at the intersection of the natural environment, the built environment, and the communities that inhabit and transform it.
A central role in the educational process is played by urban and landscape design activities, through which students develop their ability to analyze, synthesize, and intervene in different types of landscapes. Learning is supported by applied research, field studies, workshops, mapping and representation exercises, as well as the use of digital tools specific to the field. The educational process begins with the sensitive observation and interpretation of a place’s characteristics and continues with the development of proposals for the protection, enhancement, regeneration, and planning of landscapes at different scales of intervention.
The programme aims to foster critical and creative thinking, enabling students to integrate the natural, cultural, and identity-based values of a territory into landscape design and planning projects. Students are encouraged to work in interdisciplinary teams and to participate in research projects, workshops, and collaborations with public institutions, professional organizations, and local authorities, gaining practical experience in real-world professional contexts.
Graduates of the programme can continue their education through master’s and doctoral studies or pursue professional careers in design and consultancy firms, spatial and territorial planning institutions, public administration, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, or within national and international projects focused on the environment and territorial development.
Graduates are awarded the professional title of Urban Planner, with a specialization in Landscape Design and Planning, and are prepared to intervene in the territory through an integrated approach that combines the tools of urban planning with those of landscape architecture. Their education provides them with the skills required to analyze, plan, and design all components of the territorial and urban structure — including the built environment, transportation and mobility networks, green space systems, public facilities and amenities, infrastructure, and their relationship with the natural environment. At the same time, the specialization in landscape architecture develops the ability to understand and enhance natural processes, biodiversity, landscape and cultural heritage, as well as to develop solutions for the protection, regeneration, and sustainable development of landscapes. This dual expertise enables graduates to contribute to complex territorial planning and development projects, in which spatial quality, place identity, and the balance between the built and natural environments are fundamental objectives.
