ST-120 Building Materials

The Faculty of Interior Architecture / Product Design
1st Year, sem 2, 2025-2026 | Compulsory Course | Hours/Week: 2C+1S | ECTS Credits: 3
Department:
Technical Sciences
Course Leader:
conf. Gabriela Mindu
Learning outcomes:
Pedagogical approach designed to develop the correct technical vocabulary (given the non-homogenous level of specific knowledge in first year of study) and to attain a thorough knowledge of the key materials and products used in the design field, including their assortment, characteristics and behaviour in operating and maintenance conditions while applying the existing standards and norms within the design field.
Knowing the main physical and mechanical properties and the behaviour of certain base materials, indispensable properties for understanding set complex phenomena.
The ability to correctly use building materials with certain properties in order to create architecture projects or systems, which correspond with the aesthetic requirements as well as the technical ones, correlated with an aesthetic and correct designing and with the right functional use of space.
To adhere to the currently used criteria, regarding the quality assurance of the products and of the services.
The ability to understand, apply and solve certain architecture details; general solving principles by using traditional and modern building materials, finish materials and insulation materials.
Knowing and adapting to the supply and demand graph market and to the dynamic of the technological evolution.
Knowing the way materials and products behave during exploitation and how they can be maintained.
Content:
Introduction to specialized terminology. Physico - mechanical properties of materials.
Mechanical stress effects directly applicable to object design. Romanian industry rules and regulations.
Wood - General knowledge, structure and features, native woods, drying processes, protection and decoration/ennoblement of materials and products used in the design field.
Pulp and paper - definition, classification, manufacturing processes and their usage in the design field.
Natural stone - rock classification, characteristics, extraction, processing and its usage in the design field.
Precious and semi - their classification, characteristics, processing and usage in design work.
Ceramic materials and products - clays classification, properties, manufacture, ennoblement and ceramics usage in object design.
Glass materials and products - composition and properties, manufacturing processes and areas of applicability in design work.
Metals - classification, properties, methods of extraction, protection and processing of products used in the field of design work.
Precious metals - their classification, characteristics, processing and use in object design.
Plastics - general knowledge, characteristics, methods of obtaining and decoration, types of plastic mass and their areas of application in design work.
Binding and composite materials of high and low density.
Fabrics - General knowledge, types of fibers used in the design work.
Natural and artificial leather - classification, characteristics, processing and usage in architecture and design work.
Various materials - wet and dry coatings (paint, painting),for floors walls, ceilings, furniture, insulation material, flexible materials flooring, plasters, glues, adhesives and sealing materials, etc.
Teaching Method:
Lectures based on visual presentations - with digital image and/or video support. Free discussion in class.
Assessment:
1 point ex officio

(10%)
80 %

Summative Assessment (ES)

Recognition/description of all physical and chemical properties of 4 building materials

The exam will be scored with grades from 0-10. The grade obtained in the exam will represent a percentage of the final grade. The minimum grade for passing the exam is grade 5.

10 %

Continuous Assessment (EC)

Work during the semester on building materials and products presented at the seminar. During each seminar there will be an ONLINE test - from the material presented at the seminar, without rounding.
