Learning outcomes:
- to form, develop and consolidate design-related definitions, notions and concepts helping students to make sense and analyse the history of design in context
- to stimulate students’ skills of understanding and making comments on a designated object in context (the relation between content and form, utility, production techniques, form/ line/colour, style)
1 Introduction: content and objectives of the course. Esthetics, utility, form typology
2 What is Design? – terminology, its complexity in history, design in relation to arts and architecture
3 Standard and materials – definitions, influences, modernity
4 Supply, Demand, and Design (1700 - 1865) – state manufacturers, Industrial Revolution, the significance of Great Exhibitions (i.e. 1851)
5 Arts, Crafts, and Industry I (1866 – 1900) – social reform, principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England and SUA
6 Arts, Crafts, and Industry II (1900-1930)- Art Nouveau, design reform, Art Deco
7 Arts, Crafts, and Industry III (1903 – 1933) – professional associations in design (Deutsche Werkbund and DIA)
8 Arts, Crafts, and Utopias(1917 – 1944) - design schools and their principles (the Bauhaus and the VKhUTEMAS/ Higher Art and Technical Studios)
9 Modern Design (1945-1960) – International Modernism, reconstruction and “good design”
10 Design, Mass Culture and Consumism (1950-1970) – middle class and consumer culture, Psychedelia, pop culture and design
11 Design, Need and Social Responsibility (1960-1970) - eco-design and design for need
12 Postmodernism in Design (1970-1990): Anti-Design and Experimentalism
13 Urban Design and the Public Space I - urban furniture in context, typologies (bus shelters, phone booths, benches, lighting fixtures, garbage bins)
14 Urban Design and the Public Space II – typologies (street information design, pavement, bollards)
Teaching Method:
Lecture accompanied by illustrative materials. Guided conversation, explanations, problematization, case studies and examples.

The course investigates chronologically and thematically history of product design from the end of the
eighteenth nineteenth century to present. Design is looked at in relation to architecture, arts, crafts and
industry. The lecture will focus on the practice within the industrial design field in Western Europe and North America, introducing brief insights into the international context.
