Learning outcomes:

To introduce to students the specific problematic of an Architectural Design Office, the components of the management process and the needed skills in coordinating such a firm; also, to enable students to understand how a “project” is planned and organized in the firm – all these in the context of the young new design market in Romania, and related to specific recent legislation in the areas of planning, design and architectural practice.

Content:

1 Basic concepts in management, review of notions from previous years; managerial functions; specific problems in architectural design firms (LI)
2 Planning as a managerial function: strategic and operational planning (LI)
3 The place and role of architectural design and urban planning in national economy (AF)
4 The general structure of a project; phases of design process (AF)
5 Managing design activities (AF)
6 Planning a design process (AF)
7 Monitoring and control (AF)
8 Leadership and coordination in design processes (AF)
9 Structuring a firm’s strategy (LI)
10 Organization as managerial function (LI)
11 Building partnerships and competing (AF LI) – visiting a firm or a site
12 Skills – communication and public presentations (LI)
13 Skills – negotiation and leadership (LI)
14 The design firm as a case – visit or guest presentation and debate (AF LI)

Teaching Method:

Interactive presentations, short assignments (exercises individually or in small groups), debates – all combined during the compact modules. Some visits in smaller groups done outside the classes are afterwards presented and debated.

Assessment:

Team-papers on planning a firm opening (with customized parameters) and also cross-evaluation, together with a test on notions concerning project management.
