Competition Theme and Rules

Theme

Over the time, the way of cities development made interest zones to slide on the surface of human settlements. A prosperous place in a distinct time, seeked by people – a fashionable place in a given moment, - started to loose glamour, got shabby and had been forgotten. Maybe during time its structure and functions. Old factories, famous for their products, have been swallowed by the city in its impetuous development, the buildings were abandoned, getting to stand too much in the city center, living behind only pointless blind walls. Modern squares and promenades turned into places occupied exclusively by cars. Other places not even found other utility becoming simply dusted spaces. There are places that were made famous not by buildings but through their history; forgotten histories. Other places left outsides the ways of modern cities, but who may reach the lost position and status enriching, in the same time, the human settlement patrimony. The process of “museumfication” proved not to be a solution of positioning back these zones to public attention because the process fails in bringing life within.

Participants to this competition are invited, in the first place, to identify in cities the spaces that lost their characteristics, importance for the community and have been, for several reasons, marginalized and excluded from the city circuit – FORGOTTEN PLACES.
Then, the arguments for their rehabilitation will be listed and explained. A distinct attention will be carried out in highlighting the zones potential and describe means of such operation. The project will illustrate a scenario capable to revitalize the studied places. Taken in account that the topic refers to an intervention in a city body, it is expected to point out also the changes that occur in the city’s framework relying on predicted influences from the zone functioning mode.

Language

English is the official competition language

Eligibility

The competition is open to all students in architecture enrolled in an education institution affiliated to AEEA.
For schools non-affiliated to AEEA the registration Fee/ School is 100 Euro.
The projects can be designed individually or in groups under the tutorship of an architectural school professor.

Registration

Filling in the provided competition form will register each entry.
The competition form once filled will be emailed to the competition secretary no later than the Deadline announced in the competition schedule.

Jury

The evaluation will consist in two phases:

  1. A Jury held in each architectural school participant to this competition aiming to select 3-5 entries
  2. A final Jury

Architectural School Jury

In this phase the Jury constituency and process will be conducted by each participant architectural school and will aim the selection of 3-5 best projects representing the school at the final jury. Henceforth each school will establish the jury members and selection criteria.

Final Jury

The final Jury will take place in the University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu” Bucharest, Romania. Prizes and Mentions will be established for the best projects entries. The jury’s members will set the selection criteria and evaluation process.

Entry Content

  • site plan 1/500 (1/1000)
  • a set of site pictures indicating the intervention zone
  • 2 characteristic sections 1/100 (1/200)
  • all elevations 1/100 (1/200)
  • all plans 1/100 (1/200)
  • relevant perspectives
  • other graphic items that will help a deeper understanding of the proposal

Scale of above compulsory items will be chosen by participants such to best illustrate each case.

Format

HARDCOPY - 2 A1 paper formats (420X594mm) Drawings will use compulsory a PORTRAIT format of the A1. (420mm horizontal and 594mm vertical)

DIGITAL - a CD with a .bmp/jpeg extension (300 dpi) consisting in the two A1 images.

Insuring the anonymity

Each paper format A1 will display in the right down corner a code made of 6 digits (numbers and letters) written with a 1cm height ARIAL FONT body text. This code will be marked also on the CD cover, disk and folders and will be provided by to organizers upon the following rule: two digits country of origin, two digits school/university, two digits entry no.
The same code will be written on the A5 sealed envelope.
In the closed envelope an A4 paper format will state the following:

  • The name and surname of the author (authors). In case of group entries the group leader will be pointed out.
  • The name and surname of the tutor professor
  • The name of the Architectural school were the students (group of students) is enrolled
  • A declaration on self-responsibility stating that the invoiced project is original and is conceived by the indicated author(s). In case of group entries the group leader will sign the declaration.

The CD and the sealed envelope will be introduced in the same packaging and invoiced to the organizers.

Questions and Answers

Competitors may formulate questions to the international competition secretary, by email, at competitionaeea2006 at iaim.ro
They will receive (at the sent email addresses) also the list of all questions received and answers provided by the international competition secretary.

Prizes

  • I – 6000 Euro
  • II – 4000 Euro
  • III – 3000 Euro
  • 10 Mentions – 1000 Euro each

The Jury has the right to convey these prizes or to distribute in another agreed manner the prizing fond.

Results Publication

The international competition results will be communicated to each school that has participants in the competition.
The results will be announced as well on the University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu” Bucharest www site.
A press release will be invoiced to main architectural magazines.
It is envisaged An OFFICIAL CATOLOG EDITING with best projects.

Rights

The organizers reserve the printing, editing and issuing rights on all projects entries (be it integral of partial) and also the right of organizing exhibitions with the projects.
Both the HARDCOPY and DIGITAL formats become property of organizer and consequently they will not be returned to authors.
All rights derived form publishing or exhibiting the competition projects are exclusively of organizers.
Participation at this international competition represent, implicitly, the acceptance of competition terms by competitors.
