IT-21 Istoria artei.pdf
Department:
History & Theory of Architecture and Heritage Conservation
Course Leader:
conf. Celia Ghyka
Learning outcomes:
This course will survey art from the late 18th century to the pre-war avantgardes, organized around key issues that shaped artistic practice and its reception. Necessarily selective, the course will stress the key moments in the history of modern art that have proven to have decisive influences on the production and reception of art.
Learning objectives:
- understanding the historical and contextual development of visual arts in modernity
- developing a critical and advised sensibility about the language of visuality
- building a basic art history vocabulary and using this vocabulary in conducting a „close looking“ formal and visual analysis of a work
Content:
Topics:
- Introduction. Questions and methods of art history
- Elements of vocabulary and visual analysis.
- Royal Academies and the Salons. Neoclasicism
- Romantic movements (England, France, Germany)
- Realism. The Barbizon School
- Impressionism
- Manet
- Second half of the 19th century. Impressionism
- Post-impressionism ( Van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, Cézanne)
- Les Nabis and interior decoration. Bonnard
- Cubism
Teaching Method:
Lectures and discussions of images and texts. Film screenings. The course will comment key-works that have shaped the current understanding of Western art history.
Assessment:
Attendance (10%). Students are expected to attend class. The course is fast-paced and thus attendance is mandatory, and taking notes is an important skill that must be practiced throughout the semester. If a class is missed, students should get notes from fellow students.
Final exam (90%). Written text.

Students are asked to observ all the norms of academic ethic and integrity. Any paper that is even slightly suspicious of having copied (without properly mentioning the sources) will be automatically disregarded.
