Learning outcomes:

Development of the necessary skills for creating an architectural design that satisfies the users' different exigencies.
Acquiring design principles and methods, ability to find specific design solutions for the nonstructural/ non bearing parts of the buildings and their finishing details.
Proper knowledge and understanding of building’s physical problems that may occur. Proper knowledge and understanding of contemporary and traditional execution technologies.
Developing the ability to relate the physical problems and the execution technologies to the multiple functions of the building itself, in order to create comfortable interior spaces and to protect the construction elements against environmental aggressive factors.

Content:

The horizontal building envelope – the fundamentals; design principles/ guidelines, building materials for flooring.
Designing of floors with different specifications using thermal, water and noise insulation systems.
Cold/ warm floors; exterior floors.
Parapets – railings. Fundamentals, design guidelines. Contemporary and traditional materials.
Design guidelines for stairs and ramps, fundamental theoretical aspects. Materials and specific usual composites; case studies.
The roofing as part of the inclined envelope; basic theoretical aspects; quality standards for designing thermal, water and energetic efficient roofs.
Water insulated roofs; the analysis of their main components; materials and composites.
Steep roofs; specific structures for eaves and cornices; materials; their main components' analysis.

Teaching Method:

Illustrated lectures with digital support (drawings, photos, diagrams, videos), conversations, debates, explanations, questionnaires.

Assessment:

The final mark will consist of: 50% activity during the semester and 50% for final examination (graphical test and oral exam, based on the course program).
