EAAE ENHSA Network on Conservation.pdf

The III° workshop on conservation (after the II° - Ireland, September 2009) proposes to explore the contribution that conservation/restoration disciplines can offer to the urban life of the future and to the regeneration of our present towns.

The workshop follows the same experimental format adopted in Ireland. Participants are asked, through the medium of a real site, to reflect on some key issues that impact on conservation/restoration practices and theory and on how these may be explored in teaching. The aim is to create a challenging, dynamic and interactive atmosphere able to stimulate the participants’ reflective papers to be written after the event.

The working language of the Workshop is English.

The general subject

The workshop addresses the neighborhoods of modernism, acknowledging that all our European towns have a valuable urban and architectural heritage built in the last part of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century: a heritage that is currently confronted with new contemporary requirements, opportunities and serious risks.

The real context for the workshop will be a modernist borough of Bucharest also assumed as a metaphor of other similar cases in several European towns.

Workshop issues

Three inter-connected issues are put forward for consideration:

  1. The theoretical/methodological approach to the problems of conservation/ regeneration of modern parts of the cities, with regard to its different levels and disciplinary aspects.
  2. The urban planning, management, economic and social aspects of the question with special regard to tutorship and development.
  3. The design/project and process to intervene on single buildings, with all their technical contents, goals and criteria.

Call for abstracts

You are invited to prepare an abstract (maximum 300 words) for a paper regarding one of the selected issues within the general goals of the workshop. The abstracts are finalized to collect the declarations of interest in attending the workshop and to understand how the participants want to focus on the different proposed issues and aspects of the problem.

Therefore, we kindly ask you to indicate: which of the three over mentioned general issues your abstract mainly wants to focus on, author(s)’s name (s), affiliation and contact details, title and keywords (maximum five).

All abstracts and final papers should be written in English or French.

The final paper should be, in any case, explicitly related to the site in Bucharest and to the workshop experience, even if it is of course allowed any reference to previous authors’ experiences and to other contexts referred to the workshop themes and goals.

You will find, attached to this Call, a short presentation of the workshop. Additional documentation (documents and pictures illustrating the site) will be soon available to be downloaded from the EAAE website and you will be informed about that.

Abstracts should be sent, within June 27th 2011, to:

Professor Stefano F. Musso, Faculty of Architecture of the University of Genoa,
Stradone di S. Agostino, 37 -16123 GENOVA (Italy)
e-mail: conservation11@arch.unige.it
