Miscellany

The professional education in the University is the main concern and plays the most important part. At the same time, in its concern to provide the students with more and easier possibilities to access the architectural field world wide, UAUIM offers foreign languages courses, and organises study trips in Romania and abroad.

The foreign languages education

  • There are courses of English, French, Italian, German language for beginners and for advanced students.
  • One-year courses are mandatory for all the students in College and the two Faculties. A second year is optional.
  • The admission into the Advanced Studies Programmes is conditioned by a foreign language exam.
  • There are also intensive Romanian language courses, offered for the foreign students who want to study at UAUIM.

The relations between the professional chairs and departments and the foreign languages teaching body are not only functional. There are interesting research programmes (still incipient) aiming at drawing up a multilingual dictionary of architectural and building terms.

The concern with the right correspondence between the terms employed in architecture, urbanism, building in different languages is an important issue for the architectural culture, especially for a country where most of the terms have been borrowed from different other languages.

Even the etymology of these terms, the moment when they have been taken over is an important cultural matter, and a research in this field is expected.

Architectural Practice

Real professional practice is impossible to be fully simulated in the academic studios; however its awareness is unavoidable for a complete education. That is why the experience of the architectural practice is compulsory. There are various forms of practice activities included in the curricula.

Two weeks of practice are included in the curriculum of the first and second year in the Faculties and the College. This is mainly a practice on a building site, organised by the Architectural Design Departments.

At the end of the fifth year in the Faculty of Architecture, a practice of measurement of extant buildings/ releveu/ is organised by the Chair of History, Theory & Restoration. This is a traditional activity in our School; the results, accumulated along its history, built up the remarkably reach historical archives of the Chair.

Before the last (diploma) semester, all students (the two Faculties and College) must work in an architectural studio or a research structure, for a semester, in Romania or abroad. This is an individual endeavour conditioning the registration in the last semester (diploma).

The study travel

There is a long tradition in our school for students to take study trips in Romania and abroud, usualy during Easter vacations. It has been revived lately, and they have the chance to encounter first hand the most prestigious historical monuments and architectural achivements. The most appreciated destinations are those crossing Greece, Italy and Turkey, but visiting the more regions of Romania is also a destination of choise.

Sports

Beside the sports classes scheduled, students can practice various sports in the gymnasium of the University. They can also be selected for the universiry teams or other teams from Bucharest.
