ST-4 | Strength of Materials

Compulsory Course | Hours/Week: 2C | ECTS Credits: 2

Department: Technical Sciences
Titular:
lect.drd.ing. Vlad Petrescu
Learning outcomes:
Adequate knowledge of the strength and deformability of the materials to be considered for structural response of buildings. Knowledge and understanding of the preliminary structural design of structural elements: dimensions, proportions, shape.
Content:
Physical background of the strength of materials: stress-strain curve of materials; stress-strain relationship; behaviour under loading; stiffness, flexibility.
Strength and stability. Types of failures: breaking, plastification. Geometry of bar section; Moment of inertia, section modulus, radius of gyration.
Strength and stiffness of bar elements. Criteria for pre-dimensioning: allowable stresses, allowable deflections.
Centric tension and compression. Stresses normal on cross-sectional area. Stability of compressed members. Statical effect of temperature variation in bar elements.
Test for partial evaluation.
Verification, dimensioning and bearing capacity calculation of bars under tension / centrical compression.
Preliminary dimensioning of structural members: dimensioning, proportions, shape.
Shear. Shear stresses on cross section. Shear in a riveted joint under axial loading. Shear in welded joints under axial loading.
Pure bending. Bending with shear. Criteria of design. Rational cross-sections.
Deflection of bar elements under bending. Stability of bar elements under bending.
Verification, dimensioning and bearing capacity of bar elements under pure bending.
Preliminary design of structural members: dimensioning, proportions, shape.
Verification, dimensioning and bearing capacity of bar elements under bending with shear.
Preliminary design of structural members: dimensioning, proportions, shape.
Eccentric tension and compression - simple bending with axial force, oblique bending with axial force. Neutral axis. Construction of the central core.
Verification, dimensioning and bearing capacity of members under eccentric compression.
Preliminary design of structural members: dimensioning, proportions, shape.
Teaching Method:
Theoretical courses with examples and practical applications.
Assessment:
Evaluations during the semester based on applicative works (20%)
Verification test in the 7-th week (30%)
Written examination with theoretical and applicative content at the end of semester (50%)
Attendance to the course is compulsory for being admitted to enter the final written examination.
The minimum accepted mark to pass is 5 (five).
