UT-1 | Environmental Issues in Urban Planning

Learning outcomes:
This course is meant to introduce students to the study of urbanism by training their superior attitude towards environment and teaching about its components, their inter-relationships; it also teaches some methods of recognition, analysis and evaluation of various influences of the environment on setting up localities.
Content:
Course titles:
Introductory course: The model of environment as global system and its components: natural and anthropic environments (man-made and socio-economic environments); principles of sustainable development in urbanism;
Natural environment. Aspects that should be considered: features of the components, development potential of localities, aesthetic-configurative qualities, natural risks;
The terrain. Surface elements of the terrain: geography, water, soil, vegetation, anthropophilic fauna;
Conditioning of the subsoil: terrain resistance and stability, subterranean waters, seismicity, subterranean works, archeological and paleontological remains;
Climate. Major meteorological phenomena: solar radiation, temperature, humidity, air motions, rains and cloudiness. Urban climate.
Renewable and non-renewable resources of the natural environment. Protection of resources;
Protection of the natural environment against pollution and decay;
Socio-economic environment. Life quality, lifestyle. Necessity and aspirations;
Demographic size and structure of population. Demographic phenomena. Factors of influence;
Structure of population occupations. Factors of influence;
Forecasting the population;
Urbanization during the age of industrialization and informatics;
Current issues on natural and socio-economic environment in Romania;
Synthesis. The European Charter of the Rights of Town Dwellers.
Teaching Method:
Ex-cathedra lectures; slide shows; tests at the end of some lectures on several discussed problems; research works on given themes and indicated bibliography.
Assessment:
50% exam grade
50% participation to tests, lectures, homework
