ST-9 | Architectural Finishing Systems (1)

Compulsory Course | Hours/Week: 2C+1L | ECTS Credits: 3

Department: Technical Sciences
Titular:
prof.dr.arh. Ana-Maria Dabija
Learning outcomes:
- understanding of the buiding from the technical-architectural perspective
- capacity of analysing the technological-architectural sub-assemblies
- knowledge of the generic systems that accomplish the technological-architectural sub-assemblies
- understanding of the role of the technical-architectural detail in the building assembly
- understanding of the relationship between the environmental agents that act upon the building and the conformation of the technological-architectural sub-assemblies
- knowledge of the generic systems that accomplish the technological-architectural sub-assemblies
- understanding of the role of the technical-architectural detail in the building assembly
- understanding of the relationship between the environmental agents that act upon the building and the conformation of the technical-architectural detail for stairs, roofs (waterproofed and shingled), joineries
- understanding of the relation between building materials and products, the answer to the exterior and interior environmental agents that act upon the building and the aestetic demands in concieving the non-structural sub-assemblies and architectural details of the building
- mastering of design principles and methods, solving and accomplishing of non-structural sub-assemblies and architectural details for walls / partitions, ceilings, floors and handrails
- capacity of choosing the optimum solution in given (environment, building materials and products, function of the space etc) conditions
- ability for concieving and accomplishing designs of walls, ceilings, floors, handrails, from functional and asetetic point of view, according to the requested exigencies and performances
- technical interdisciplinary corelations (implications of the structural and installation systems over the conformation of the technologic-architectural detail)
- development of a technical vocavulary in the field of the non-structural assemblies and architectural finishings of walls, ceilings, floors, handrails
Content:
Introduction on the physics of the constructions: environmental agents; heat and humidity in the buildings
Environmental agents and their influence against the buildings; solar radiation; sound in buildings
The vertical component of the envelope; principles for its designing and carrying out, according to the quality exigencies, by using modern and traditional technologies.
The vertical component of the envelope; traditional exterior finishing systems
The vertical component of the envelope; modern and traditional material and structures that accomplish interior finishings
The vertical component of the envelope; external thermal insulated composite system
Ceilings. Thermal problems of the ceilings; modern and traditional material and structures for ceilings.
Floors. Theoretical elements; principles of design, according to the quality requests provided by national and international legislation; materials for the floors.
The horizontal component of the envelope; traditional and modern principles for its accomplishing
Warm floors; designing of the floors, with improved qualities (with thermal – hygro and sound insulation systems)
Cold floors; designing of the floors, with improved qualities (with thermal – hygro and sound insulation systems); exterior floors; “accidents” in the field of the floors
Parapets – handrails. Fundamental theoretical elements; materials and structures
Teaching Method:
Beginning with a brief presentation of some principles of the Physics of constructions, the course passes through the following chapters: simple and complex finishing works for the walls and ceilings, including the decoration elements, floor systems, parapets - handrails
The imposed exigencies and the performances are analized according to the conditions of use (functionability – durability – aestetics), as well as to the realities of the ways of execution, the technological level and the display of the available materials. They all determine the technical solutions as well the efficiency degree that they represent. Lectures "ex cathedra", based on materials prepared and presented in digital format (course support). Occasionally there are invited guests on specific technical topics.
Assessment:
Semestrial written grid-type exam, with the possibility of consulting written documentation; the mark consists of a mean value between the grid test (40%), the value of the tutored aplication carried out in the studio (50%) and the the value of the Building Physics exercise carried out as individual study (10%); The minimum acceptable mark for the periodical evaluation is 5 (five).
