The Faculty of Architecture / Architecture
1st Year, sem 1, 2009-2010

ST-2 | Mathematics

Compulsory Course | Hours/Week: 1C+1S | ECTS Credits: 2

Chair: Technical Sciences
Titular:
lect.dr.mat. Anca Vitcu
Learning outcomes:
a) knowledge on history and interferences among architectural, art and mathematical theories;
b) knowledge of modern mathematics as important vehicle in the development of contemporary techniques in architecture;
c) knowledge on operational research applied to architectural projects to meet clients requests in relationship with time, costs and construction rules and regulations.
Content:
Mathematical thinking and language have played an important role in the development of culture by influencing the way people view and conceptualize reality. The journey from natural to complex numbers and later to fractals changed the whole human history by changing the sense of the words “time” and “space”. The mathematical course inquires the way in which this evolution influences the creation and arrangements of forms and volumes in the architectural space, beginning with the first archaic civilizations until the end of the XX century. In light of these, problems on proportions and group symmetries, on perspective and optical illusions, elements of topology and algorithmic architecture will be discussed and a combination o computer models and simulation projects will accompany the theoretical lectures. On the other hand the discussions on contemporary architecture will be also approached as project management/operational research problems through a range of optimization techniques and multivariate statistical concepts.
Teaching Method:
Lectures and applications
Assessment:
Final evaluation (50%), seminar evaluation (50%)
