Learning outcomes:
- learning mapping techniques (sketches, measurements, scale drawing);
- acquiring knowledge about architectural drawing conventions (plan, section and elevation representation);
- learning principles of graphic design (clarity and coherence of the drawing, pagination, writing );
- understanding of the relationship between function and spatial organisation (function/ programme; function/ spatial distribution; development of the programme, functional and spatial hierarchy, dimensional elements);
- understanding of the architectural role of the building system (structural/ non structural element, vertical/ horizontal structure; structure/ material/ geometry; base/ body/ roof, structural system and spatial form);
- understanding of architectural shape (definition and spatial orientation; construction/ shape/ expression/ limits, spatial relationships, architectural promenade/ light, principles of architectural composition).
Content:
THEME – Object/ Representation
Exercise 1 – Mapping
The mapping exercise is conceived to facilitate a firsthand, empiric contact with the physical architectural object. The assignment will be accompanied by a brief analysis of the object, supported by text and images, concentrating on aspects such as function, structure, shape but also significance, context and resources which condition architecture.

THEME – Structure/ Material
Exercise 2 – Roofed space
Into the limits of a very simple function - relaxation pavilion, shelter for public transportation, bicycle shed, etc. - the exercise concentrates on aspects concerning structure and materiality of the architectural object and also on the relationship between these two and spatial form.

THEME – Structure/ space (traditional plan)
Exercise 3 – Expo pavilion
The main purpose of this assignment is to help the student understand the traditional plan concept - the conventional type of structural and spatial organization used but which still has a significant presence in modern architecture. The formalization of this simple function is made inside a given grid by using a structural module formed of basic linear and plane design elements (pillar, beam, slab, wall). The exercise concentrates on both the pavilion and its exterior space.
Teaching Method:
individual discussions, open discussions with pin-ups before fellow classmates, lectures accompanied by multimedia presentations, study sheets , project sketches.
Assessment:
Instructed exercises – Project design: final review based on individual presentation of the project (pin-up before a jury formed of several members of the 1st year Project Design Chair)
Exercises without instruction – Evaluation short projects: One evaluation project sketch each semester.
